The comprehensive eco guide covering anything from sustainable clothing stores, zero waste and bulk shops, organic skincare, second hand shops, health food stores and eco laundry in Ubud, Bali.
When I got to Bali after 3 months on Papua with no acces to sustainable alternatives (at all!), I was basically in heaven when I got to Ubud. In Ubud there are almost sustainable shops on every street, but it still took me a while to find exactly the right stores that had the stuff that I needed. I searched online for a guide, but couldn't find one that was comprehensive enough - so I made one myself! I have tried my best to include a wide selection of stores that should cover almost anything you could possibly need and I hope that this makes it easier for you to make sustainable choices.
Ubud zero waste store
I discovered way to late that Ubud actually has a zero waste bulk store. I have put this shop at the top of this list because they literally have everything. You can find anything from plastic free sunscreen, skincare, laundry soap, shampoo bars, toothpaste tablets, menstrual cups, reusable cotton pads and safety razors to reusable cuttlery, metal lunchboxes, water bottles and to go coffee mugs. Plus they also have a whole section of bulk spices, oils, liquid soaps and more! They also have some books that you can exchange with your own for free - I got my new favorite book by Jane Goodall in exchange for an old book of mine. Its even located close to a great second hand shop, but I will talk more about that later in this post.
Organic skincare shops in Ubud
Not everything in Utama spice is plastic free but they have a great selection of essential oils and a quite cheap refill station with bug cream, liquid shampoo and a lot of other soaps. Its not the cheapest place to buy essential oils, but it is the most popular. There are multiple shops in the center of Ubud, but the one close to monkey forest is the biggest.
Nadis Herbal sells facemarks, lip balms, face creams, essential oils and much more! This is where a bought all of my essential oils, as they are a lot cheaper here than in Utama Spice. Not everything they sell is plastic free though which is a shame.
Sustainable clothing shops
Studio K - Organic and Ethical yoga wear - Jl. Goutama Sel. No.15, Ubud, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
I was so close to buying the green yoga set from Studio K! They have nice colors and cool styles plus the material is made from recycled plastic(On the tag it says that's its plastic from the ocean, but I haven't looked into the production).
Love Stories Market - Jl. Goutama Sel., Ubud, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
I loved this store and came back several times! They have a lot of plant died organic clothing in nice colors and styles, recycled paper notebooks, reusable cutlery kits and bottles and even has a section of second hand clothing. Worth a visit!
Above the Clouds Natural Wear - Jl. Dewisita No.3, Ubud, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
Above the Clouds has three locations in Ubud and makes a lot of great neutral clothing.
Ananda Soul also has a little selection of clothes, but I especially loved the selection of ethical jewelry made from recycled materials!
There are multiple 'Bali Yoga shop's in Ubud and they have a wide selection of everything from essential oils, reusable straws and bottles to yoga clothing.
Bambooku sells clothing, towels and more made entirely from Bamboo.
Health food stores
Bali Buda has a great bulk store with granola, beans and other stuff for cooking plus a nice selection of bread and cakes.
DownToEarth cafe - Jl. Goutama Sel., Ubud, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
A health food store in the center of Ubud located next to Paradiso Cinema. They have both clothing, bread, vegetables, dips, natural makeup and a lot of more specialized health food. As far as I know this is the only real health food store in Ubud. Tip: They have plastic free and vegan popsicles which are really good!
Second Hand shops
Toko Senyum / Smile Shop - MAS, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
I spend hours in this second hand shop! They have both clothing, underwear, accessories and books! 'Smile shop' has two different locations in the Ubud area, but this one is closest to the center.
This bookshop has a lot (!) of both new and used books on various different topics and genres.
Igna used book shop - Jl. Monkey Forest Ubud Main Road, Ubud, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571
A smaller bookshop but with exclusively used books.
This place uses soap nuts instead of all of the chemicals and parfume that many other laundry places does. I unfortunately didn't get to try getting my laundry done this place, but it deserves to be on the list.
Refill My Bottle - https://refillmybottle.com/app
I wish I knew about this app earlier! It shows you places to refill your water bottle on a map - which saves you both money and reduces plastic!
That's it for this time!
Please let me know if you know any shops that I missed that deserves to be on the list. Thank you so much for reading this guide and educating yourself on sustainable alternatives!
